Romantic connections short or long-term in any kind of crime fiction can add dimension to the character. Long term relationships can and do create sparks and new dynamics--as in real life--for characters to deal with. They may be part of the primary story or simply a sub-plot. They exist in all three of my series and I use them in various ways, depending on the needs of the story.
